The seemingly calm atmosphere in Osun State after the August 15, 2026 governorship election was disrupted yesterday following the reported killing of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s appointee, Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade.
Emir was reportedly killed around 10:00 a.m. during a gun battle involving rival groups at motor parks in Mayfair, Sabo and Lagere, Ile-Ife. An eyewitness said he was leading loyalists in an attempt to take control of the Mayfair motor park when he was shot. The violence lasted over 20 minutes, forcing residents, traders and passersby to flee. A viral video showed his bloodied body inside a vehicle.
Adeleke ordered Police Commissioner Ibrahim Zungura to investigate the killing and arrest those responsible. He also ordered warring transport groups to leave the parks and directed the immediate creation of a Park Management System.
Meanwhile, the DSS warned Muslim and Christian leaders in Osun of alleged terrorist plans to attack churches, mosques, markets and other public places ahead of the 2027 elections. The warning was given at meetings in Osogbo on September 9.
Muslim leader Mustapha Olawuyi and CAN chairman John Adeleke urged stronger security. Adeleke also asked residents to report suspicious persons, announced an emergency security meeting and directed traditional rulers to review grassroots security.
