Oluwole Seun, a final-year student of Materials Science and Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has reportedly died by suicide.
The reason for the action remains unknown. His close friends reportedly said they noticed no unusual behaviour before the incident.
OAU’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the university received an emergency report at about 1:30 pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The incident happened at an off-campus apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
Following the report, the university’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team went to the location with officers from the Moore ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
Seun was taken to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
The university said items and information recovered from the scene have been handed over to the police, who are investigating the death. Student Affairs authorities have also been informed to support affected students.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and classmates.
He urged students facing emotional, academic or personal difficulties to seek help through official campus support structures, saying, “No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone.”
OAU also urged members of the community to stay calm and avoid spreading unverified claims while the investigation continues.
