A powerful windstorm followed by heavy rain has destroyed several homes and forced many residents to flee Turbangida village in Danani Ward, Bursari Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The storm struck on Tuesday, tearing roofs off buildings as falling trees damaged houses, shops and other property, leaving many families without shelter.
A resident, Mustapha Bukar, told Daily Trust the storm lasted about 40 minutes and caused widespread destruction.
“Alhamdulillah, there has been no report of loss of lives so far, but many properties, including livestock, were destroyed after trees fell on houses during the storm,” he said.
Turbangida, about 18 kilometres from Bursari LGA headquarters, is now facing the impact as affected families try to recover their homes and livelihoods.
Another resident, Modu Adamu, appealed to the Yobe State Government and aid organisations for urgent support.
“We have lost our houses, shops and means of livelihood. More than 25 people have been rendered homeless by the heavy rainfall and strong winds that affected several parts of our community.
“We are appealing to the government and humanitarian organisations to come to our aid with food and other essential items. This disaster has left many of us with nothing and forced us to depend on the kindness of others,” he said.
The incident comes as weather-related disasters continue across Yobe. The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency said 25,012 people, 6,683 households and 13 local government areas have been affected since the 2026 rainy season began. Seven people died, 209 were injured, 17,101 shelters were damaged or destroyed, while 257 people from 67 households were displaced. Environmental experts linked the rising incidents to climate change and widespread deforestation.
