N2,000 Can Get You Food From ‘Mama Put’, But $1 Cannot Buy You Anything In The US — Oshiomhole Defends Tinubu’s Reforms

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, insisting that living in Nigeria is still cheaper than in the United States despite complaints about rising prices.

The Edo North lawmaker made this argument on Thursday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Using food prices to support his position, Oshiomhole said Nigerians could still buy a meal with N2,000, unlike people in the US who would struggle to get anything with just over one dollar.

He said, “In Nigeria, N2,000 can get you something from mama put, but $1-something cannot buy you anything in the US.”

The former Edo State governor described the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate as tough decisions that were needed to stop the economy from collapsing.

He explained that the government previously used a large part of its revenue to pay for fuel subsidies and service debts, leaving little money for development.

Oshiomhole said Tinubu showed leadership by removing the subsidy on his first day in office to free up funds for infrastructure, education, healthcare and the student loan scheme.

He added that while the President was thinking about future generations, his critics were more concerned about immediate benefits.

He also rejected claims that the reforms had made life worse for Nigerians, urging citizens to be patient as he believes the gains would become clearer with time.
