Malawi have ended Nigeria’s remarkable record of never losing to a debutant team at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) since the tournament began in 1998.
The Scorchers made a huge statement in their first-ever WAFCON appearance, shocking the 10-time champions at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday.
Three second-half goals from sisters Temwa Chawinga and Tabita Chawinga handed Malawi a historic 3-2 victory over the Super Falcons.
Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu scored Nigeria’s goals in the thrilling encounter.
The defeat was Nigeria’s first against a WAFCON debutant in 18 meetings at the tournament.
Before facing Malawi, the Super Falcons had won 16 and drawn one of their previous 17 matches against teams making their WAFCON debut.
But that impressive record is now over.
Malawi produced a courageous display on Tuesday night to claim a deserved 3-2 win and hand Nigeria a result that ended one of the Super Falcons’ longest-standing records at the continental competition.
