A video circulating online has drawn reactions after showing Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, at the inauguration of the City Boy Movement’s Lagos State Chapter Executive Committee on Tuesday.
The footage shows Tijani arriving in Ikeja, greeting dignitaries and moving through the venue with other attendees and security personnel.
In another clip, the commissioner, dressed in full uniform, is seen speaking with participants wearing caps carrying President Bola Tinubu’s campaign logo and the initials “ST”, linked to Seyi Tinubu, the President’s son.
The master of ceremonies introduced him, saying, “The CP Tijani Fatai and his entourage. And please, we welcome them.”
The City Boy Movement is a youth-led sociopolitical group supporting Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It focuses on grassroots mobilisation, youth empowerment and backing APC-aligned candidates ahead of the 2027 elections. The Lagos inauguration reportedly featured pledges to mobilise millions of votes across the South-West.
The opposition Nigeria Democratic Congress criticised the commissioner’s presence.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the upcoming general election,” the NDC said.
The party said his attendance raised concerns over police neutrality and possible bias during the elections.
“We understand that the rudderless APC-led administrations have no iota of respect for our institutions, but seeing a Commissioner of Police at a partisan event can only point to one thing: HE WILL BE BIASED,” the statement added.
The NDC called for Tijani’s suspension and sanction, neutrality during the 2027 elections, protection for supporters of other candidates and his resignation.
The video has triggered mixed reactions online. Some questioned the presence of a serving police commissioner at the event, while others defended it as part of his security duties.
APC chieftain Bashir Ahmad wrote: “Write to him. If he is available at the time, it would be great for him to be present to help maintain security and order.”
He later added: “Obviously, he was there to help provide security and order, not to join the movement.”
As of Wednesday, neither the Lagos State Police Command nor Nigeria Police Force headquarters had responded to the video or NDC demands.
