The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has apologised for his long-held teaching that Christians who fail to pay tithe would not make heaven.
An old video of the cleric has resurfaced online, drawing fresh attention to the issue. In the video, Adeboye admitted that the teaching was not supported by the Bible and said he was wrong to make the claim.
“I apologise for saying if you don’t pay tithe, you won’t make it to heaven. I’m sorry, I was wrong. It’s not in the Bible,” he said.
Adeboye, however, explained that giving remains an important biblical principle, but the Bible does not say that salvation depends on paying tithe.
He instead pointed to what the Bible teaches about entering God’s kingdom, quoting Hebrews 12:14.
“What the Bible says is, ‘Be at peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord,’” he stated.
The veteran preacher said the experience had reminded him that even spiritual leaders can make mistakes and must be ready to correct them.
The resurfaced video has generated widespread discussion among Christians, especially over Adeboye’s recent support for Tinubu over insecurity in Nigeria. Many Nigerians have described the position as hypocritical and tribalistic, questioning why he did not take the same action during the Jonathan regime.
