The Rivers State Police Command has suspended the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and another officer following reports that suspected cultists funded the renovation of a police outpost.
The command’s spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, disclosed this in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday.
The incident came to light after suspected cultists from Abuloma Community in Okirika, within Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, reportedly visited the outpost on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to celebrate their contribution.
Agabe condemned the development, warning that allowing suspected criminals to gain recognition through a police facility could damage the force’s image.
She said, “The Command strongly condemns any action or association capable of compromising the integrity, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force or conferring legitimacy, recognition or acceptance on suspected cult groups or other unlawful organisations.”
She added that, under CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, the command maintains zero tolerance for criminality and actions that weaken public trust.
According to Agabe, the DPO and the Divisional Officer overseeing the outpost have been queried and removed from their duties pending investigation.
The Commissioner of Police has also ordered a full probe to identify those who funded the renovation, determine which officers approved it, and establish whether police personnel were involved.
Agabe explained that Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 allows legitimate public contributions to police facilities. However, such support must not affect police independence, security or professional standards. Investigators will also check whether proper approvals and background checks were carried out.
