The Oyo State Police Command has rescued a one-month-old baby girl allegedly sold for N2 million and arrested two suspects, including the child’s mother and the owner of the health facility where she was born.
The incident happened in Ido Local Government Area of Ibadan. Police said efforts were ongoing to arrest other people linked to the alleged child trafficking.
Police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade disclosed the development in a statement on Friday.
According to the police, Mary Amos, a resident of Ogunwade in Ido, reported the case on October 15 after raising concerns over her granddaughter’s disappearance.
The baby’s mother, identified as Cecilia, allegedly implicated the 40-year-old health facility owner, Adeleke, and another suspect, Folawewo. She claimed they lured her into the arrangement and helped sell the child to a person identified as Odunayo.
Investigations showed that N2 million was involved in the deal. Cecilia allegedly received N1 million, while the other two suspects got N500,000 each.
Police later rescued the baby and arrested Adeleke. Efforts are continuing to track down Folawewo and ensure that everyone allegedly involved faces justice.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable people.
“The Oyo State Police Command reiterates its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons and urges members of the public to report suspected cases of child trafficking and related offences promptly,” the statement said.
