Lionel Messi has been included in Argentina’s squad for a match that could mark the end of his international career.
The 39-year-old is expected to play against Benin on October 6 at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, with Argentina Football Association president Claudio Tapia confirming the plans on Tuesday.
Tapia said the game would allow Messi to receive a deserved farewell from supporters at home.
“We invited the best player in the world to play, our captain Lionel Andres Messi, to have a deserved farewell on October 6, here in Argentina,” Tapia said in a video on Instagram.
Argentina will face Bolivia and Burkina Faso before taking on Benin.
Messi had earlier indicated that he planned to end his international career. He announced his retirement from the Argentina national team on August 31, ending a career with the country that lasted more than two decades.
