Man Electrocuted While Stealing Cables From Transformer In the Middle of the Night

A yet-to-be-identified man has died after being electrocuted while allegedly trying to vandalise a transformer in Abam-Ama community, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident was discovered by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force during a patrol, the group’s commander in Okrika LGA, Igwe Godswill, said on Tuesday.

Godswill said the group received a report about the incident in the morning. He explained that the man was believed to have been electrocuted when power was restored while he was allegedly vandalising the transformer.

He said: “When we got to the scene, we saw blades, a torch and other items. From all indications, he went there to steal from the transformer, and when power was restored in the middle of the night, he was electrocuted. That was how he died.”

According to him, the matter has been reported to the Okrika Police Division for investigation.

Godswill added that the man’s identity was still unknown, noting that suspected vandals often travel from distant communities to carry out such activities.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has yet to comment on the incident. Its spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, has not responded to an inquiry about the matter.
