A lawyer, Kelly Ekezie, has shared a courtroom experience that has got people talking about child custody and the role of fathers after a marriage ends.
Ekezie said she recently noticed that more women are asking courts to grant custody of their children to their former husbands while they pay maintenance and visit the children.
Sharing one such case, she wrote: ‘Yesterday in court, a woman made a request that had almost everyone laughing.
‘“My Lord, let him have custody of the children. Grant me visitation rights, and I’ll contribute financially to their upkeep.”
She said the situation took an unexpected turn when the man’s lawyer argued that the children should remain with their mother.
Ekezie wondered what had changed, explaining that some fathers become less willing to provide financial support after mothers are granted custody.
According to her, school fees, feeding and medical bills can become the mother’s burden, with some fathers telling the children to ask their mothers for money.
She added that some women, especially those with older children, are now willing to let their former husbands take custody while they pay maintenance and exercise visitation rights.
Ekezie said such cases appear to remind people that children need their mothers, too.
However, she stressed that custody decisions should never be treated as a way of passing children around like parcels.
She maintained that the children’s best interests must always come first and welcomed the discussion her observation had started.
She concluded that parenting remains a shared responsibility, even after a marriage ends.
