A major fire broke out at SPAR, a popular shopping outlet in Calabar, on Saturday morning.
The fire started inside the shopping centre, sending thick smoke across the city. Flames could also be seen from Barracks Road, about 100 yards from the scene.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. The emporium has several activities, including bread baking, cooking and electrical operations.
“About three fire service trucks have arrived. They are trying to pump water from SPAR borehole to try to put out the fire. It is not known if anybody is trapped inside but there is confusion here at the car park”. Victoria, a journalist at the scene, told Vanguard.
She added that fire service officials at the scene refused to answer questions.
SPAR, an Indian grocery outlet, is located in the heart of the town, near Calabar Watt Market and Bogobiri, a popular Hausa-Fulani residential area in Calabar.
The outlet began operations in 2012.
