Newly promoted Hull City stunned Manchester United with a 2-0 win at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, handing Michael Carrick a painful start to his first competitive game in charge.
Semi Ajayi put Hull ahead in the 17th minute with a close-range finish after a corner. Nobel Mendy then made it 2-0 in the 38th minute, heading home from Regan Slater’s set-piece delivery.
United had most of the possession but could not break through Hull’s organised defence. After the game, the club’s official account posted: “Defeat in our opening game.”
Hull, who returned to the Premier League after winning promotion through the Championship play-offs, defended strongly for the rest of the game. They held on for a famous victory in front of 24,470 fans.
The defeat triggered strong reactions from Manchester United fans on X.
