FG Approves N70,000 Monthly Transport Support For Workers To Cushion Rising Living Costs

The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport support of ₦70,000 for public service workers at all levels for six months, starting in November 2026, to help ease the burden of rising living costs.

The decision was reached on Tuesday, October 27, during a meeting between the government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja. Both sides met to discuss workers’ welfare, the high cost of living and pending agreements.

A memorandum of understanding signed after the meeting confirmed the payment, stating, “That transport intervention of Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000) commencing from November 2026 would be paid across all levels for a period of six months.”

The government also agreed to clear outstanding peculiar allowance arrears covering May 1, 2026, onwards. The payments will be made in three equal monthly instalments, beginning in November.

However, both sides failed to agree on when the national minimum wage should take effect. They agreed to set up the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee immediately and begin discussions.

The document stated, “It was agreed that the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee would be constituted and commence meeting immediately. It should however be noted that there is a disagreement on the effective date of implementation.”

The NLC also raised concerns about the government’s response to its demands. The memorandum noted that the union’s leadership “expressed concern over the Federal Government’s attitude towards the above issues.”

The government, however, said it respected the Congress’s right to demand better working conditions and was making genuine efforts to address its concerns through a structured intervention.
