The 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted while travelling from Oyo State to orientation camps in Abia State have regained their freedom.
The graduates were kidnapped seven days ago after gunmen attacked the two buses carrying them along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Imo State.
The victims were travelling from Ibadan to their NYSC camps on Thursday when the attack happened. The kidnappers first demanded N50 million for each person, putting the total ransom at N1 billion.
They later reduced the demand to N5 million per victim, bringing the total to N100 million.
The rescued corps members are now receiving treatment at the Department of State Services Hospital in Owerri.
NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, visited the facility to see the victims and check on their condition. He was joined by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the DSS Director and the Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Imo State.
Nafiu also spoke to the rescued victims during the visit.
The Managing Director of Uko Akwa Ibom Motors Nigeria Limited, Isiah Akpan, confirmed the development on Wednesday.
