Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to punish anyone involved in electoral malpractice if he becomes Nigeria’s president.
Speaking on Channels Television, Obi made it clear that his administration would not tolerate election rigging.
“This coming election, we will rig those who rig it.”
He added that his government would ensure that electoral fraud would no longer be allowed in the country.
“And let me assure you number two, if elected the president of Nigeria, nobody will rig election in this country again.”
Obi also stressed the need to improve political parties and the electoral system as part of efforts to address election malpractice.
“Because the first thing we need to do is to strengthen our parties, strengthen the processes.”
The former Anambra State governor further said anyone seeking elective office must have attended both primary and secondary school. He warned that people who falsify their certificates would face jail time.
“Any INEC official, anybody who is involved with election under my watch that rigs the election will go to jail.”
He also outlined the education requirements for candidates, insisting that anyone who failed to meet them or forged their certificates would be punished.
“Our law will be strict for you to contest election, you must have attended a primary school. You must have attended a secondary school. And it will be visible, it will be clear. If you didn’t attend any of them or forge your certificate, you go to jail.”
Obi concluded by promising that nobody would be above the law under his administration and that everyone would be required to obey it.
