Three members of a local vigilante group have been killed after gunmen attacked a civilian guard post in Gwa Rim community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Residents told Daily Trust that the attack happened at about 2 am on Wednesday, when the gunmen opened fire on vigilantes keeping watch at the community guard post.
A resident, Damba Dang, confirmed the incident, saying the attackers struck while the community was asleep and killed three vigilantes.
Dang expressed concern over the renewed attacks on communities in the area, saying residents were becoming increasingly worried about their safety.
He said the killing was particularly disturbing because the vigilantes were only trying to protect their community and help residents guard against attacks.
Daily Trust reports that several vigilantes have lost their lives while providing security assistance to their communities.
Dang appealed to security agencies to urgently strengthen security around Gwa Rim and other vulnerable communities in Riyom to prevent further attacks.
He also called on security operatives to investigate the incident, track down the attackers and ensure those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.
