Aggrieved students of D.S Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun State, on Tuesday blocked the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to protest the alleged killing of a colleague during a robbery attack.
Armed men reportedly invaded a student hostel overnight, killing one student and injuring others.
The incident led to a major protest at the Polytechnic, located along the Wasinmi–Itori axis in Ewekoro Local Government Area. The protest caused heavy traffic on the busy highway, leaving motorists and commuters stranded.
The school management confirmed that a final-year student was killed during the robbery and suspended examinations scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Timetable, Examination and Academic Calendar Committee, Engr. Gideon O. Adekunle, the institution described the incident as unfortunate.
The statement read, “Following an unfortunate event that occurred overnight, which resulted in the loss of a student and another being critically injured during a robbery incident at Eruku, the examinations scheduled for today, Tuesday, July 28, and tomorrow, Wednesday, July 29, are hereby postponed.
“This is to ensure that students in the affected area are able to regain their composure and emotional stability and, most importantly, to honour the deceased.
“Examinations will resume on Friday, July 31, 2026, as contained in the timetable. A new schedule for the postponed examinations will be communicated in due course.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the protest to Daily Trust, saying police operatives had been deployed to restore peace and order.
However, he said he could not immediately confirm if the protest was linked to the students’ killing during the robbery.
He said, “What I can confirm is that there is a protest on the ground. As for the second issue, give me some time and I will get back to you.”
Daily Trust reports that institutions in parts of Ogun have faced repeated security threats, with several attacks leading to the deaths of students and the theft of their property.
In May, an armed robbery killed a student of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, in Remo North Local Government Area.
At a security summit on rising insecurity in student communities, the polytechnic’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Adedayo Musari, said robbery attacks on students remained a major concern.
He said,”Between 2009 and 2026, 15 robbery cases were recorded in Ipara, with two students killed. In Isara, 32 robbery cases were recorded, leaving five students dead, while in Ode, 58 robbery cases were recorded, resulting in the deaths of 16 students.”
In April, about 12 gunmen reportedly attacked students of the College of Engineering, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun campus, injuring several and stealing mobile phones, a vehicle and other valuables.
The attackers also reportedly cut some students with machetes.
