A yet-to-be-identified 100-level student of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, was reportedly shot on campus on Wednesday by suspected cultists.
The incident came 48 hours after rival cult groups reportedly engaged in a shooting spree on Monday amid a supremacy battle, causing tension on campus.
The Monday clash was said to involve suspected members of the Vikings and Ku Klux Klan cult groups.
Details of Wednesday’s shooting remained unclear, but a source close to the victim said the student was rushed to a hospital, where doctors were preparing to perform surgery to remove bullet pellets lodged in his body.
The source said, “His close friends were contributing money to raise funds for the surgery to happen.”
It could not be independently confirmed whether the victim belonged to any cult group.
A viral video also showed the injured student on a hospital bed before his coursemates carried him into the university campus.
Rivers State Police spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, had confirmed Monday’s clash and said the command was investigating.
Asked about Wednesday’s shooting, Agabe said she had seen the viral video and would contact the Divisional Police Officer for details. She had not responded further as of Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, the university suspended all remaining Students’ Union Government Week activities and directed students to return to classes on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
In a statement signed by Registrar Dr Chinonye Ajie, management warned that students who failed to attend lectures would be held responsible. It also urged them to avoid actions that could threaten their academic pursuits and the peace and security of the university.
The statement reads, “This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect.
“Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday, August 13th, 2026, for normal academic activities.
“Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions.
“Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuit and the peace of the University.”
