The Presidency spent N37.64 billion on presidential trips, logistics, foreign exchange and other travel-related costs between June 2023 and April 2026, GovSpend records show.
The spending was N9.18bn in 2023, N25.26bn in 2024, N2.70bn in 2025 and N477.4m between January and April 2026.
President Bola Tinubu left Abuja on Sunday for a three-week annual vacation in Europe, with London as his first stop. His spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said he would return to “join the hectic campaign for the January 2027 elections.” His full itinerary was not disclosed.
Tinubu has now made 52 foreign trips and spent about 261 days abroad since May 29, 2023, visiting at least 30 countries. France and London have been among his most frequent destinations.
GovSpend records also show that $553,884 was released for Oluremi Tinubu’s overseas trips between 2023 and 2024, worth N700.7m at the rates used.
Transparency and Accountability Group President Ayo Ologun questioned the legal basis for funding the First Lady’s trips because the Office of the First Lady is not established by law.
“Where did that amount of money come from? If it is spent on the wife of the President, that is abuse of power,” Ologun said.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also criticised Tinubu’s timing, saying, “Nigeria may not be facing a constitutional vacuum today, but there is a disturbing vacuum of political leadership.”
Meanwhile, presidential aide Sunday Dare defended the vacation, saying Tinubu needs to “refuel” after months of handling security, economic and other state matters.
