Two governorship candidates in Saturday’s Osun State election, Adebayo Simon Adewale of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Adedamola Adebayo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have stepped down from the race and endorsed incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Adewale announced his withdrawal at a press conference in Osogbo on Thursday, saying the decision followed consultations with party leaders, supporters and other stakeholders.
He said his decision was based on an assessment of the state’s political situation and was guided by the broader interest of Osun rather than personal ambition.
Adewale said Adeleke deserved another term to build on his administration’s achievements. He also urged APM members and his supporters to back the governor at Saturday’s election.
According to him, the move was aimed at promoting peace, stability and development in the state. He added that politicians should put the interests of the people first.
Separately, PDP candidate Adedamola Adebayo, popularly known as Fryo, also announced his withdrawal and declared support for Adeleke.
Speaking at a press briefing in Osogbo, he called on PDP members, supporters and the party structure to support the incumbent.
“I encourage all PDP members, supporters and structure to share this position peacefully. Support the emergence of Ademola Adeleke as the governor till 2030,” he said.
The withdrawals came less than 48 hours before voters are set to decide Adeleke’s fate, with both candidates now directing their supporters to the incumbent instead of continuing their campaigns.
