The Osun State House of Assembly has considered a constitutional amendment Bill seeking the establishment of State Police Services across Nigeria.
The Bill was considered during Tuesday’s plenary in Osogbo after it was transmitted to the Assembly by the National Assembly as part of the ongoing process to amend the 1999 Constitution.
Speaker Adewale Egbedun told lawmakers that the proposed amendment had been sent to State Houses of Assembly across the federation for consideration and approval.
He said the involvement of state legislatures was required to move the constitutional amendment process forward in line with the legislative procedure.
During the debate, Lawrence Adeoti, Taofeek Olayiwola, Adewumi Adeyemi and Jeremiah Awoyeye backed the proposal.
The lawmakers said, “The proposed establishment of State Police Services is timely because it will strengthen the security architecture of the country, particularly at the state and local government levels.”
They added, “The establishment of State Police Services will enhance the ability of states to provide adequate security personnel and respond more effectively to security challenges within their respective jurisdictions.”
Majority Leader Babajide Kofoworola then moved a motion backing the amendment. Tajudeen Adeyemi seconded it.
The Assembly also dissolved into the Committee of the Whole to consider the Osun State Park Management System Bill, 2026. Proposed amendments and corrections were considered and adopted as part of the Bill.
