One child is still missing after a school bus carrying pupils and two adults was trapped by floodwater along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka, Anambra State.
The incident happened early Tuesday after heavy rain, while the group was reportedly on its way to school.
The Anambra State Police Command said its Safe School Operatives, working with community members, responded after receiving information about the incident. Nine people were rescued.
Police said a search and rescue operation had been launched for the missing child.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the search was being carried out with community members and other relevant stakeholders.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, had ordered officers to continue and widen the search until the child was found.
Ikenga urged residents, especially those living or working around the affected route, to share any information that could help the police and other agencies.
He also warned parents, guardians, school authorities and motorists to be extremely careful around flooded roads, bridges and waterways during heavy rainfall.
Parents and guardians were advised not to allow children to cross flooded or dangerous routes.
Ikenga said the command would keep working with communities and relevant agencies under the Safe School Initiative to protect schoolchildren and prevent avoidable deaths during emergencies.
