Arise News Political Editor, Sumner Sambo, has said Peter Obi could still seek a second term if he wins the 2027 presidential election, despite any agreement to serve only four years.
Sambo made this position known during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, November 2. He dismissed claims by some political figures that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate would serve just one term before handing over power.
According to the political editor, such an agreement cannot stop Obi from seeking re-election because the 1999 Constitution gives a sitting president the right to contest for another term.
“Nothing will stop Peter Obi from seeking a second term if he wins. He will betray a one-term pact,” Sambo declared.
He argued that any informal agreement made before an election cannot override the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. He also pointed out that Nigerian politicians usually seek another term after becoming president, suggesting Obi would likely follow the same path.
Sambo’s comments have since generated debate among political groups and on social media. While supporters of the former governor have rejected his position, his opponents believe the remarks reveal the issues surrounding the proposed one-term agreement.
