Nine Die In Horror Crash Along Ijebu-Ode-Benin Expressway

Nine people were killed in a road crash along the JBD/ORE route in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Monday.

The crash happened at about 4:55 p.m. around the Bethel area under the Ijebu-Ode Unit Command, according to Afolabi Odunsi, Chief Route Commander and Sector Public Education Officer, FRSC Ogun State Sector Command.

The vehicles involved were a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus, registration number 14B-299DT, owned by Delta Line, and a white Sino Truck commercial vehicle, registration number AAB162XD, belonging to Bill Gas Solution Ltd. All nine occupants died.

The FRSC said it was raining when the crash occurred and the road was wet.

“Preliminary investigation identified speed violation (SPV) as the probable cause of the crash,” the statement said.

The agency said its rescue team reached the scene within two minutes of receiving the report at about 4:58 p.m.

The victims’ bodies were taken to the General Hospital morgue in Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles were towed to Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police Motor Traffic Division.

FRSC Ogun Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, especially commercial drivers, to slow down in the rain, obey speed limits and keep safe distances.

He warned that wet roads reduce tyre grip and visibility, making it harder to control or stop vehicles safely.

The FRSC condoled with the victims’ families and urged road users to put safety first.
