A member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly representing Udege/Loko Constituency, Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, has raised concern over fresh violence in his constituency, claiming that no fewer than 32 people have lost their lives in the past three months.
Speaking under a matter of public importance during plenary, Kana said the repeated attacks had forced residents to live in fear and affected farming and other economic activities in several communities.
He said the crisis started on April 3, 2026, in Odeni Gida Electoral Ward of Nasarawa Local Government Area. According to him, it has claimed lives, left many injured, displaced residents and destroyed property.
Kana alleged that more than 200 people had fled their homes, while houses, vehicles, motorcycles, food items, farmlands and other valuables worth millions of naira were destroyed.
He listed Angwan Mada, Apura Adagba, Udege Kasa, Akyewa and Angwan Ogiri among the affected communities.
“The people can no longer sleep with their two eyes closed. They are afraid to go to their farms, while crops are being destroyed by cattle,” he said.
The lawmaker also alleged that two more people were killed in Akum Electoral Ward on June 25 and July 9, 2026. He warned that the violence could spread to nearby communities if urgent steps were not taken.
Kana urged the Assembly to condemn the attacks and ask security agencies to immediately deploy personnel to the affected communities to restore peace and protect lives and property.
He also appealed to the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide food, medical supplies and temporary shelter for displaced victims. He further called on the House Committee on Security and Special Duties to investigate the remote causes of the crisis and report back.
Responding, Speaker Dr. Danladi Jatau described the attacks as unfortunate and urged Governor Abdullahi Sule to direct the Commissioner of Police to send more security personnel to Udege and other affected communities.
He also called on traditional rulers and community leaders to set up peace and reconciliation committees to encourage peaceful coexistence. Jatau appealed to the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to deploy personnel to strengthen security in the affected areas.
The Speaker directed the Clerk of the House to forward the Assembly’s resolutions to Governor Sule for necessary action.
Several lawmakers, including Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad, Hon. Esson Mairiga, Hon. Hudu A. Hudu, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, Hon. Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki and Hon. Ibrahim Peter Akwe, backed the motion and called for more security personnel in communities facing similar security challenges across the state.
