The Kogi State Police Command has arrested Jacob Irewa over the alleged attempted culpable homicide of his wife, Berida Irawo, at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.
In a statement on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat, said the incident happened on Friday, August 14, 2026.
“On Friday, 14th August 2026, at about 2030 hours, the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report of the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim burnt some of the suspect’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission.
“The suspect subsequently threatened her, fetched petrol from his motorcycle and proceeded to set her ablaze,” she said.
Afusat said the victim survived and is receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.
According to her, “The suspect, in his statement to the Police, admitted to setting his wife ablaze. The Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.”
The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the incident and restated the command’s zero tolerance for violence, especially domestic violence.
He urged the public to settle domestic disputes through lawful means and avoid actions that could endanger lives.
He said the suspect would be charged to court after the investigation.
“The Kogi State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice,” the PPRO added.
