A woman is currently in a coma after falling from a storey building in Mbonu Ejike, Owerri, Imo State, following an incident involving her sister’s boyfriend on Sunday.
The man was arrested on Monday, according to the police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, who said claims that the woman had died were false.
Mr Okoye confirmed that the victim remained in critical condition and had been moved to a better hospital.
He also dismissed reports that the suspect pushed her after she refused to sleep with him, saying the claim had not been confirmed.
“The suspect who is now with us revealed that he was having an altercation with the girl. In the process, someone knocked at their door, and he went to open it. Upon getting to the door, she heard a noise from the back door, it happened to be that the girl ran and jumped through the staircase, but I don’t know, I was not there. Eyewitnesses also saw what happened.
“For now, the families of the victim and the suspect are even telling us that they doubt if the young man could do that kind of thing. The young man is praying that the victim survives, so that she can also testify. She’s in a coma now. She has been transferred to a better hospital.”
When asked what the woman was running from, Mr Okoye said:
“I don’t know. This is what the suspect told us. To me, what he said does not really add up very well.”
He added that police investigators had been sent to the scene to collect statements from eyewitnesses.
