Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, in Kogi State, has expelled two students over alleged involvement in gay practice.
In a statement released on Friday by the university’s Information and Public Relations Unit, the school said the decision was approved during the 31st Regular Meeting of the University Senate after it reviewed recommendations from the Students’ Disciplinary Committee. It said the action followed the provisions of the Students’ Handbook (Second Edition, as amended in 2025).
The expelled students are Onumoko Hamza of the Biology Education Department and Abdulazeez Eneji of the Mining Engineering Department. The university did not state when or where the alleged offences took place.
The Senate also approved the rustication of four students for one academic session over their involvement in a fight. They are Favour Akowe of the Microbiology Department, Simbiat Babamuharuna of the Biology Department, and Zainab Omayoza and Sukura Bukola, both from the Biochemistry Department.
The university repeated its commitment to discipline and order, saying it would continue to take firm action against any student found guilty of breaking its rules and regulations.
The report added that same-sex relationships are illegal in Nigeria under the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, signed into law in January 2014 during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The law provides a prison term of up to 14 years for anyone convicted of same-sex sexual acts.
The defendants pleaded not guilty, were granted bail, and the case was eventually struck out by a Federal High Court due to what the judge described as a lack of diligent prosecution by the police.
