Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another person travelling in his vehicle.
The attack happened around 5pm on Thursday along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.
Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists in Lokoja on Friday.
According to Saliu, the attackers came out of the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists. A blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH was later found abandoned on the road.
“The driver, identified as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead in the vehicle, while another occupant was taken into the bush by the assailants,” the statement said.
Saliu said the police, working with other security agencies, had stepped up operations in the area. Personnel were also searching the nearby forest for the abducted victim and the attackers.
She added that Yunusa’s body had been taken to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy, while investigators were following all available leads.
The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, ordered continued security operations along the route and directed efforts to arrest those behind the attack.
The police urged motorists and residents along the route to stay alert and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
The command said more updates would be released as information becomes available.
