The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded a full investigation into the death of Etimbuk Daniel, former Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Akwa Ibom State University, at an NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State.

In a statement, NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, expressed shock over the incident, raising concerns about alleged fake medication and delayed medical care.

Afeez explained that Daniel complained of a headache at the camp and received drugs from medical personnel. His health reportedly worsened after taking the medication.

Daniel then requested an urgent transfer to a hospital, but approval was allegedly delayed. He died before receiving further treatment.

Afeez also claimed that a doctor later discovered the drugs were fake.

“We were further informed that the doctor later identified the drugs administered to him as fake. These are deeply troubling allegations that require a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his tragic death,” Afeez stated.

However, the claims about fake drugs and delayed treatment remain unverified.

Describing Daniel’s death as a major loss to Nigerian students, Afeez said:

“I received with rude shock the news of the death of Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Akwa Ibom State University, who reportedly passed away at the NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State,” he said.

He called for stronger action against fake drugs, stressing the need for accountability and quick access to medical care.

Afeez offered condolences to Daniel’s family, friends, colleagues and the university community.

“NANS is mourning this painful loss, and our further actions and official position on the matter will be communicated in due course,” he said.

He also prayed for strength for the grieving family and students.
