Edo Assembly Gets New Speaker As Blessing Agbebaku Resigns

Yekini Idiaye, the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, on Monday emerged as the new Speaker after Hon. Blessing Agbebaku resigned from the position.

The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Osamwonyi Atu, temporarily took charge of the assembly and presided over the plenary where Idiaye was elected Speaker.

Idiaye is currently the longest-serving member of the House from Edo North. He has been a member of the assembly since 2019.

Agbebaku reportedly decided to resign after learning that about 18 of the 22 lawmakers had signed an impeachment notice against him.

Most of those said to have signed the notice were reportedly lawmakers who had lost their return tickets to the House.
