A 74-year-old cleric, Joseph Adeniran, has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Center over the alleged defilement of his nine-year-old granddaughter.
Adeniran was arraigned on Tuesday before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on a charge of defilement.
The prosecutor, ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, told the court that the alleged offence happened on June 18, 2026, at the defendant’s residence.
According to Ademigbuji, Adeniran allegedly fingered the girl, causing her to bleed heavily. A neighbour reportedly noticed bloodstains on the child’s clothes and raised the alarm.
The prosecutor said the girl told the neighbour that her grandfather had fingered her, leading to the bleeding.
Ademigbuji added that the matter was reported at a police station, after which Adeniran was arrested.
The prosecutor said the alleged offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Chief Magistrate Mrs C.M. Kushanu did not take Adeniran’s plea. She ordered that he remain at Kirikiri Correctional Center until Sept. 24, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
