President Bola Tinubu has described the Hausa people as key pillars of Nigeria’s unity and progress, praising their role in the country’s social and cultural development.
Tinubu made the statement in a post on his official X handle on Wednesday as Hausa communities in Nigeria and around the world marked the 2026 Hausa Day, also known as Ranar Hausa.
The President also pointed to the growing global reach of the Hausa language, saying it has become an important tool for communication, unity and trade.
“The Hausa people are great pillars who play a vital role in the unity and progress of Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
He congratulated the Hausa community and noted that this year’s celebration was being held at the historic Daura Palace in Katsina State.
“I congratulate the vast Hausa community on the occasion of Hausa Day, which is being celebrated at the historic Daura Palace today,” the President said.
Hausa Day is marked every August 26 to promote the Hausa language and celebrate the culture and heritage of Hausa-speaking people.
The annual event started as a social media campaign by Nigerian journalist Abdulbaki Aliyu Jari. It was created to promote the use of Hausa on digital platforms and highlight its cultural value.
The celebration has since gained international attention among Hausa communities. Although World Hausa Day has not received formal recognition from the United Nations, its popularity has continued to grow.
Hausa remains one of Nigeria’s major indigenous languages and one of Africa’s most widely spoken languages, with millions of speakers across the continent and beyond.
