More than 20 people have reportedly been killed after suspected armed attackers invaded Binper community in Bwai District of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The attack happened in the early hours of Tuesday, as the assailants reportedly moved from one house to another, attacking residents while they slept.
The National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, Bulus Dabit, confirmed the incident. An eyewitness, Daniel Musa, said the attackers were heavily armed.
According to Musa, the assailants broke into homes, opened doors and attacked residents, killing several people and leaving others badly injured.
“Our village came under attack last night and in the early hours of today, Tuesday. Heavily armed persons were moving from house to house, opening the doors of people who were sleeping and slaughtering them,” he said.
Musa said more than 20 deaths had been confirmed by Tuesday morning. He added that several others were injured, while some residents were still missing.
The attack came less than a week after three people were killed in the area amid renewed tension between Fulani and Mwaghavul communities, which had also accused each other of arson.
The latest violence has raised fresh concerns about security in Mangu, which has faced repeated attacks and communal clashes.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the killings or confirmed the casualty figure.
