The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has given the university authorities and other stakeholders two weeks to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement, warning that failure could lead to an indefinite strike.
Chairman of ASUU-KASU, Dr Abubakar Abdullahi, issued the ultimatum on Monday at a press conference in Kaduna, citing worsening conditions for academic staff.
He said the agreement, which took effect in January 2026 and provides better welfare for university lecturers, has yet to be implemented at KASU.
“More than eight months after the agreement was signed, Kaduna State University is yet to commence its implementation,” Abdullahi said.
According to him, the union had written several times to the university management, Governing Council and Governor Uba Sani, urging them to implement the agreement.
Abdullahi said the delay had left KASU lecturers among the lowest-paid academics in Nigeria. He also said more than 200 lecturers, including professors, associate professors, PhD holders and other senior academics, had left for universities within and outside Kaduna State.
“The loss of experienced academic staff could take years for the university to recover from,” he warned.
He also warned that salary arrears could build up from January 2026 if the agreement is implemented without settling outstanding payments.
Other unresolved issues include university autonomy, heavy workload, promotion arrears, death benefits, group life insurance, 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards, and pension remittances.
ASUU-KASU demanded full implementation of the agreement, payment of salary arrears, better pay and working conditions, and urgent steps to retain experienced lecturers.
The union said it had engaged stakeholders to resolve the matter peacefully.
“We want the authorities to treat these issues with urgency and provide satisfactory responses to avert industrial disharmony and preserve peace and stability at the institution,” the union said.
