A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was shot dead in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday after a clash between suspected hoodlums and the security team of music star David Adeleke, known as Davido.
The Osun State Police Command said the incident happened shortly after Davido accompanied his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.
The governor had gone to present his certificate of return after winning the August 15 governorship election. He arrived around 3:15 pm with a convoy of about 20 vehicles.
Police said trouble began after the visit when Adebayo Taoreed, popularly called “Small Rugged”, allegedly tried to approach Davido but was stopped by his security team.
The police identified Taoreed as an ex-convict, suspected notorious thug and alleged member of the Eye confraternity. The confrontation reportedly drew other suspected gang members.
Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said the suspects briefly blocked the palace entrance and disrupted movement, although the governor’s convoy left safely.
The suspects later fled but allegedly shot Yusuf as they left.
“On Wednesday, 19th August 2026, at about 1600hrs, the Command received information that one Tajudeen Yusuf, male, aged 60 years, of Oke-Ayepe area, Osogbo, was shot by suspected hoodlums at Itaolokan area of Osogbo,” the statement reads.
Officers found Yusuf “lying in a pool of blood”. He was taken to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The incident followed an earlier attack on Adeleke’s convoy, during which suspected hoodlums exchanged gunfire with security personnel.
Commissioner of Police (Election), Samuel Etaifo, condemned the “dastardly act” and ordered a full investigation to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects.
