Popular Nigerian comedian and content creator Nosa Afolabi, popularly known as Lasisi Elenu, has criticised Nigeria’s healthcare system, calling its condition alarming and unacceptable.
Elenu raised concerns about patients struggling to get urgent treatment, especially in government hospitals where bed spaces are reportedly unavailable.
“You are one sickness away from the grave in Nigeria. How can a hospital turn you back over no bed space?” he said.
The comedian also recalled losing his mother in 2022, saying his family struggled to find a bed for her in a Federal Government hospital. He said she was moved from one federal hospital to another but was repeatedly told there was no space.
According to Elenu, the family eventually had to use personal connections to seek help.
He claimed Nigerians sometimes die because of basic needs such as oxygen, blood, medication, injections and hospital beds. He also questioned the government’s response to the growing number of Nigerian doctors leaving the country.
Elenu urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other governors to build and properly equip more standard hospitals instead of focusing mainly on renovations.
He said Nigerians should have access to functional healthcare within their communities and prayed they would not face medical emergencies.
