Suspected rival cultists clashed at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Monday, sending students running for safety.
The clash involved the Vikings and Clansmen confraternities, who were reportedly fighting for supremacy. The immediate cause was unknown, but the violence happened during the university’s ongoing Students’ Union Government Week.
A viral video showed students scampering for safety as gunshots rang out. No casualty was reported, but academic activities were temporarily suspended as students either left the campus or hid in classrooms and hostels.
Port Harcourt-based rights activist Charles Jaja blamed the incident on poor security, saying the university management had lost control of the campus.
He stated, “Yesterday’s gunshot at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education is a sad reminder of what a university ought not to be and I think that the school management has lost control of its campus.”
