The Anambra State Government has challenged former governor Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, accusing him of breaking promises on workers’ salaries and state debt.
In a post on its official X account, the state’s New Media Office asked, “When will Peter Obi quit presidential campaign?”
The government recalled that Obi had promised to quit the presidential race if it was proven that he left Anambra in debt. It also said he had pledged to resign as governor if workers were not paid on time.
It stated, “He (Obi) vowed to quit the presidential race if proven he left Anambra in debt.
“As governor, he vowed to resign if workers weren’t paid on time. He broke both. He left office in 2014 with heavier arrears.”
The government also shared a 2006 letter allegedly signed by Obi’s then Chief of Staff, Chuks Iloegbunam, appealing for payment of salary arrears owed to Anambra Water Corporation workers.
The letter stated that the workers were last paid in February and referenced Obi’s manifesto, which pledged that he would resign “if there is any case where workers are not paid as and when due.”
However, the salary arrears may have been inherited, as Obi had only been governor for about five weeks when the letter was allegedly written.
Obi has rejected the government’s claims, insisting he left office without unpaid salaries, pensions or gratuities. He also said he would stop his 2027 campaign if evidence showed he left debts or unpaid contractor obligations.
