The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has unveiled the names of his newborn princess at a traditional naming ceremony at his palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
A statement on Sunday by his spokesperson, Sodiq Lawal, said the event was attended by traditional rulers, palace chiefs, Yoruba culture custodians, family members, dignitaries and well-wishers from across the country.
The ceremony came exactly one week after Queen Oluwatosin Ogunwusi safely delivered the princess. It was described as a moment of joy and thanksgiving for the royal family and Ile-Ife.
Oba Isoro, custodians of various deities, other Obas and Ife High Chiefs also attended.
Prayers were offered for the princess using symbolic items including sugarcane, Aadun, honey, dried fish, money, pen, bitter kola, kola nuts, alligator pepper, snails, schnapps, water, palm oil and doves.
Lawal said the items represented wishes for sweetness, prosperity, wisdom, long life, abundance, peace, knowledge, fertility, divine protection and a life of honour.
The Lowa Adimula of Ife, Oba Ademola Adeyeye, formally announced her traditional names with the Ooni’s approval.
The princess was named “Adelewa, Adeyele, Adeshikemi and Ayoade, Omo Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.”
Oba Ademola congratulated the monarch and queen, praying that the princess’ arrival would bring peace, prosperity, unity and progress to the kingdom.
The Ooni thanked God for the new life and divine blessing, saying the safe delivery and preservation of the mother reflected God’s grace and faithfulness.
He described the birth as a blessing that brought joy to Ile-Ife and the Yoruba race. He prayed that she would grow in wisdom, grace, honour, good health and divine favour, with a life of purpose, service, excellence and strong ties to Yoruba heritage.
The monarch also thanked everyone who celebrated with the royal household and offered prayers and goodwill.
