Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has said Nigerians buying petrol at about N1,400 per litre are getting a better deal than motorists in the United Kingdom, where the price is above N3,000.
Okpebholo spoke on Thursday at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State. He said he visited London the previous week and bought petrol to compare prices.
“Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about N3,000-something for one litre of fuel,” the governor said.
He said the comparison showed Nigerians were paying less for petrol than people in the UK.
“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy. He’s an economist,” he said.
The governor spoke as Nigerians continue to face higher petrol prices and rising costs of essential goods after the removal of the subsidy.
Okpebholo said President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms were tough but would bring results. He compared the reforms to an aircraft taking off, saying passengers only get food after reaching cruising altitude.
“I want to let you know, very soon Nigeria will be on the cruising level. Nigeria will be on a cruising level,” he said.
He also cited road construction as a sign of development and backed the Federal Government’s work on the damaged Benin-Asaba Road.
Okpebholo also supported Tinubu’s return in 2027, telling those seeking to challenge him to reconsider.
“Is Aso Rock vacant? Is Aso Rock vacant? So Aso Rock is not vacant,” he said.
