A woman, Rashidat, has asked a Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to end her marriage to Sarafatu, accusing him of neglect, domestic violence, constant fights and threats to her life.
Rashidat told the court that marrying Sarafatu was the biggest mistake she had made. She said she had known no peace since the marriage began because of her husband’s reckless lifestyle.
She alleged that Sarafatu failed to meet his responsibilities at home, leaving her and their children without enough food. She said the children often appeared malnourished, while she worked round the clock to make up for his alleged failure.
Rashidat also accused him of turning every disagreement into a fight and repeatedly punching her until she was sore. She asked for custody of their children, with Sarafatu ordered to provide for them. She also sought an order stopping him from threatening or interfering with her private life.
Sarafatu agreed to the divorce but accused his wife of infidelity. He said he caught her with another man and reported the matter to her parents, but she continued the relationship.
He alleged that Rashidat later left their home after becoming pregnant for her lover.
“My wife is a slt. She was dating another man while still married to me,” he said.
He added, “I caught her with this man and reported her to her parents who admonished her.
“My wife rather than disengage from the illicit relationship went deeper into it.
“She moved out of my house after she was impregnated by her lover. My lord, I agree that our union be dissolved.
“I, plead that our children be put in my care because their mother will influence them negatively.”
