A man who lost his wife and six children in a brutal attack earlier this year, Haruna Bashir, has remarried under the Kano State Government’s mass wedding programme for 1,500 couples.
Bashir married Nabila Kabiru Yunusa on Friday at the central Juma’at Mosque of the Emir’s Palace in Kano. Her dowry was fixed at N200,000.
Governor Abba Yusuf served as guardian (Wali) for the grooms, while the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented the brides.
Bashir lost his wife, Fatima Abubakar, and their six children on January 17, 2026, after attackers stormed their home at Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano and killed the entire family.
At the ceremony, Kano State Hisbah Board Commander-General, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, said the state government had given Bashir extra support to help him rebuild his life.
He said the government sponsored Bashir for Umrah, helped him take part in the Hajj pilgrimage and allocated him a house at Amana City to reduce his emotional and psychological burden.
The mass wedding took place across all 44 Local Government Areas to support widows and other eligible beneficiaries.
Each bride received N200,000 as dowry and extra funds to start a small business.
Daurawa urged the couples to respect marriage, live peacefully and build stable families. Chief Imam Prof. Sani Zahraddeen also urged the couples to show kindness, love and justice, especially husbands with more than one wife.
Beneficiary Musbahu Abdullahi thanked the government and promised to care for his wife responsibly.
Prayers were offered for peace and unity in Kano and Nigeria.
The government earmarked about N1.5 billion for the programme, its second under the current administration.
