The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, visited Plateau State on Wednesday over recent killings in Mangu and other parts of the state, assuring residents that the Nigeria Police Force would step up security and ensure those behind the attacks face justice.
Disu made the pledge during a condolence visit to the Plateau State Government. He said lasting peace and development would require close cooperation between security agencies, government and communities.
“I am on the Plateau to discuss issues bothering on the killings in Mangu and other parts of the state. We are not happy with the situation and I can assure you we have made some arrests.
“Having gone round and engaged with stakeholders to have lasting solutions to the problem, I can assure you people have hope and confidence in the police and we will continue working together in synergy and collaboration for a secure environment.
“We are intensifying community engagement and intelligence gathering to identify threats early, protect vulnerable communities and bring perpetrators to justice.
“Building trust between security personnel and communities is important, and I urge residents to provide credible and timely information to enable security agencies prevent attacks and apprehend criminals.”
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Deputy Governor Ngo Josephine Chundung Piyo, praised the IGP’s response and firsthand assessment of the situation.
She also called for the activation of the Mobile Police Barracks in Gashish, Barkin Ladi LGA.
“The facility has remained moribund since its establishment.
“Putting the facility to full operational use would strengthen police presence and improve response capabilities in communities within the axis.”
She urged residents to stay alert and avoid reprisals.
“Residents should avoid reprisals that could further escalate tensions in affected communities,” she said.
