Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahya Jingir has urged Muslims in Kano State to support Muslim-Muslim political tickets and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of future elections.
Jingir spoke at Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s “Abba Go Again” campaign event, which the governor also attended, according to a video seen by SaharaReporters.
Speaking in Hausa, Jingir praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for promoting the Muslim-Muslim ticket and said, “I am among the staunch advocates of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, and I call on you to come together for Muslim-Muslim ticket.”
He acknowledged opposition from Christians and other religious groups but questioned whether his support for the arrangement was wrong. “But as a Muslim, I repeat it, Muslim-Muslim! No going back on this.”
Jingir also dismissed arguments that Nigeria’s democracy includes people of different faiths, saying, “But we pray and observe fasting, and it’s said that the majority carries the votes.”
He urged Muslims to get their voter cards, saying, “Let’s show the infidels their limit, who claim they are more populous than us in Nigeria. They are lying!”
Jingir linked his stance to the defeat of opponents of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, saying they came third in the polls.
“Therefore my vote is for a Muslim-Muslim candidate! What about you, the Muslim umma?”
He also warned against people with a “dark history,” alleging that the Maitatsine movement were “the so-called Christians in disguise.”
The Maitatsine movement was a radical Islamic movement linked to violent disturbances in northern Nigeria, especially during the 1980s.
Jingir ended by praising a government promoting family values and said people were converting to Islam in America.
