The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has maintained that he is the number one traditional ruler in Yorubaland, pointing to the historical influence of the old Oyo Empire on Yoruba civilisation.
The monarch made this known during an interview with broadcaster Edmund Obilo. When asked if the Alaafin was the supreme king in Yorubaland, he said:
“Historically, yes. If you want to go by history and the contribution of Oyo to Yoruba civilisation, then I would say that the Alaafin is number one.”
He also dismissed claims that he was competing with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, for traditional supremacy.
“I don’t fight for supremacy or whatever with anybody,” Oba Owoade.
Speaking about his commitment to the Yoruba people, he said he regularly prayed for their progress and believed Oyo’s success would bring honour to the entire race.
“I believe that when Oyo succeeds, the Yoruba in their entirety get honoured. That’s my belief,” he said.
The monarch also spoke about development projects in Oyo, particularly a proposed circular road and its planned dualisation. He said the road would connect areas such as Infinity and Sabo and improve the city’s appearance.
On the forthcoming Oyo Empire Day, he disclosed that the three-day celebration was expected to attract about 40,000 people. The event would bring together communities linked to the old empire to reconnect with their roots, preserve Yoruba culture and discuss the future of coming generations.
He explained that a Hall of Fame would also be established to honour people and communities that contributed to Yoruba civilisation and heritage. He added that everyone interested in Yoruba culture was welcome.
“Everybody is invited. If you are a lover of culture, you love the way Oyo is doing its things, you are part of it. We are not excluding them,” he said.
Speaking about his reign, Oba Owoade described himself as determined and resilient.
“I am a go-getter and very resilient. I don’t give up easily. I try as much as possible to make a positive impact wherever I belong to,” he said.
