A man and his son have died in a road crash at Sabon Barki in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, while three other people sustained injuries.
The incident happened around 4:20 pm on Sunday when a commercial tricycle, popularly called Keke NAPEP, carrying a family returning from church caught fire after another vehicle hit it.
An eyewitness, Kefas Gyang, told The Punch in Jos that he arrived at the scene after the crash and found people trying to rescue the victims.
“I was passing by on my way from work when I saw people crying. I went closer to find out what had happened and saw people trying to rescue the victims.
“But the fire was too much for us to handle. It was beyond our strength, and we could not do much to rescue them from the burning tricycle,” Gyang said.
He explained that he did not witness the collision but alleged that the other vehicle’s driver fled the scene.
The victims’ mother suffered a broken leg, while two other children and the tricycle rider were taken to the hospital.
The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, confirmed the deaths, saying two male victims were trapped under the vehicle.
“The accident was a bad one. Two persons died — a male adult and another male. They were trapped under the vehicle. The bus driver who caused the accident ran away. It is rather unfortunate,” Longsan said.
He urged motorists to drive carefully and obey traffic rules.
