Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Cristian Romero will take over as Argentina’s captain after Lionel Messi plays his final game for the national team.
The Argentina coach announced the decision ahead of the team’s upcoming friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin.
Romero, 28, will inherit the armband as Argentina prepares for the end of the Messi era. Scaloni said the Tottenham defender was already next in line behind Messi and Nicolas Otamendi.
“The captain is going to be Cuti,” Scaloni said.
“He was already the third captain after Leo and Ota (Nicolas Otamendi). There is Emiliano (Martinez), who can also wear the armband.
“Rodrigo (De Paul), who will not be in these two games, can also wear it. Lautaro (Martinez) can wear it. Cuti is the right one.”
